Dr. Olimpio Wen
Certified Executive Coach & Principal Consultant
I grew up in Sao Paulo, Brazil, observing a ‘mission-driven organization’ before I even knew the meaning of those words. My father was a doctor who founded a dual family medicine and acupuncture clinic, located just below our family home. My mother doubled as homemaker and the clinic’s manager. The work of our family's clinic centered around the integration of eastern and western medicine for the purpose of offering people a more holistic care — one that went beyond managing symptoms, addressed root issues and led to lasting change.
Witnessing my parents’ joy in serving others in this way left an indelible imprint in me and contributed to my own desire to help people become more whole, more integrated physically, emotionally and spiritually, and more connected in their relationships and to their work.
This desire would first lead me to a vocation in pastoral ministry and to pursue an academic career. My academic focus was on understanding how people were formed within the context of family, culture and community, and how they transformed through the stages of life. I was especially interested in adult development and our capacity to nurture growth, creativity and resilience throughout our lives. These interests led me to become a therapist, and to help build up an influential counseling center in New York City (an extension of Redeemer Presbyterian Church).
Amidst the restless energy of midtown Manhattan, I wore many hats: I counseled individuals and couples through critical life transitions, helping them find deeper meaning and connection in their struggles. I directed a program for professionals going through addiction, divorce, or grief recovery, helping them find wholeness again and start a new chapter in life. As a career counselor, I coached and trained people with diverse career and leadership development needs.
I also had the privilege of guiding many people in leadership roles -- executives in corporations, startup founders, entrepreneurs, and nonprofit and ministry leaders. My burden for the unique pressures and challenges leaders face, combined with the immense impact they have in the lives of others, led me to ask: how can I walk alongside them even more deeply and practically in their leadership journeys? How can I help bear their burdens and empower them to lead their people well?
This personal mission led me to pursue training and certification as an executive coach and to launch my leadership coaching and consulting practice in 2015.
I have come to see that my longing to help develop leaders has been a common thread in all my endeavors thus far. For leadership is not about a title or rank. It is a posture of the mind, heart and soul that we all can cultivate that says: I can help transform a better world — a better family, community, organization, industry. But that transformation begins with me, and it can only happen together with others.
I feel immensely privileged to partner with people in this transformative work. I am now based out of the beautiful city of Portland, Oregon, where I try to enjoy as many trails (and food trucks) as often as possible with my wife and daughter.
